Abyssal Station Nine is a permanent research habitat on the floor of the Challenger Deep, the deepest surveyed point in any ocean. Sixty two people live and work there in the dark. This page is a dive: scroll, and we will take you down all 10,994 metres.
Where we leave the light.
Every rotation begins the same way: on the deck of RV Meridian, in weather, in noise, in the last natural light the crew will see for months. The submersible cradle swings out, the hatch seals, and the ocean accepts one more delivery.
The sunlight zone is thinner than most people imagine. Photosynthesis, weather, and nearly every fish you have ever eaten: all of it happens in a layer shallower than the station is long.
Surface Exchange

An annual survey of everything that lives in the light, so we can measure exactly what the deep is missing.
The first lie the ocean tells you is that it is empty.
Past two hundred metres, blue is the only colour that survives, and then barely. This is the twilight zone, home to the largest animal migration on Earth: every night, billions of tonnes of life rise toward the surface to feed, and sink again before dawn.
It is also where the ocean starts making its own light. Most animals down here can produce it. We are still learning what they are saying.

No sunlight has ever reached this water. Not once.
Below a thousand metres the ocean is permanently, perfectly dark. Temperature falls to four degrees and stays there. Food arrives as a slow snowfall of organic matter from the world above, and everything that lives here has learned to wait.
Our midnight moorings watch the fall of a single whale carcass for years at a time. A whale fall can feed a community for decades: first the flesh, then the bone, then the chemistry inside the bone.

The abyssal plains cover more than half the planet, and we have mapped less of them than the surface of Mars. Sediment here accumulates at a centimetre per thousand years. Step lightly: the seafloor remembers everything.

The hadal zone exists only in trenches: narrow scars where one tectonic plate slides beneath another. The pressure at the bottom exceeds 1,000 atmospheres, the weight of a small car pressing on every square centimetre. Life thrives here anyway, and so, carefully, do we.
Station Nine sits on a terrace above the trench axis: four habitat rings, two wet labs, a hangar, and the only permanent human address below six thousand metres.
